Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Director Teases Crossplay Text Chat, More Customisation, No More Voice Packs

As Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 players prepare for Patch 15 (the game’s second Anniversary Update) and what lies beyond, game director Dmitry Grigorenko has shown up on Reddit again to answer some of the hotter questions about the game’s present and future.

Putting aside the back-and-forth with WH40K diehards about extremely specific lore bits and items, there were some valuable bits of info casually dropped ahead of the next few monthly community updates.

When asked about making the text chat visible for console players (something that somehow hadn’t been delivered yet), Grigorenko confirmed it’s being “worked on right now”. One has to imagine the feature will have to go through a number of approvals tied to the platform owners, on top of getting the usual profanity filters in and whatnot. In any case, expect to be able to coordinate with Space Marines on consoles without using the voice chat sooner rather than later.

On the customisation front, Space Marine 2 developers have been feeding the player base quite well, but it seems they’re far from done even if some of the more recent updates focused on the finer details. “Without spoiling stuff, let’s just say SM2 will continue to get more customization options and will continue to feature more and more exotic options,” the game director teased.

More specifically, the team hasn’t completely forgotten about the more recent Techmarine class, with more customisation options on the way, but Grigorenko warned fans “have to keep in mind that they wear a very specific armour, so not everything can match from other classes.”

Voice packs, however, are probably never coming back: “I’m afraid we are no longer planning any additional voice packs. We are going to release what we’ve done recording in Patch 15 and that is probably it.” He explained the “model is unsustainable with the fact that you will need to keep recording voices for every map you release and localize it for all languages, finding recording time slots for the same voice actors for all languages every month.” Moreover, the attempt to put a price tag on voice packs completely backfired, marking one of Space Marine 2’s few post-launch mistakes. It’s unsurprising to hear Saber won’t be bothering with them again.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is available on PC (Steam & Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. A Nintendo Switch 2 port was announced a while back, but it doesn’t have a release date yet.
