BigBasket FY26 loss balloons to Rs 3,192 crore

With Tata Digital-owned BigBasket intensifying efforts to expand its quick commerce business amid fierce competition from Blinkit, Instamart and Zepto, the online grocer is plunging deeper into losses.

BigBasket’s parent entity, Supermarket Grocery Supplies Pvt Ltd, saw its losses cross the Rs 3,000 crore mark in the financial year ended March 2026. The company’s filings with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs reveal that its consolidated net loss widened 59% to Rs 3,192 crore in FY26, compared to Rs 2,007 crore a year earlier.

1. The higher losses came despite growth in its topline: Revenue from operations rose a little over 6% to Rs 10,498 crore, compared to Rs 9,867 crore in FY25. BigBasket’s B2C arm, Innovative Retail Concepts Pvt Ltd, raked in Rs 8,223 crore, accounting for 78% of the company’s operating revenue. However, its losses swelled 66% year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 3,073 crore in FY26.

BigBasket pivoted to quick commerce in 2022 with the launch of BBNow. By August 2024, it had fully transitioned into a quick commerce model, delivering orders within 15-30 minutes. As a result of this shift, the company’s B2C arm now primarily focuses on its quick commerce platform BBNow.

Meanwhile, BigBasket’s B2B arm’s operating revenue rose 3% to Rs 2,298 crore from Rs 2,227 crore in FY25. This entity managed to narrow its losses to Rs 102 crore, although the improvement was marginal. Under its B2B vertical, BigBasket caters to the HoReCa segment by offering bulk grocery delivery service to restaurants and catering businesses.

Apart from these two segments, BigBasket also owns DailyNinja, an online milk delivery platform. This entity narrowed its loss to Rs 14.5 lakh, compared to Rs 33 lakh a year ago.

Last year, the company had also piloted its 10-minute food delivery service in Bengaluru.

2. Advertising revenue becomes new growth engine: Following its inception in 2011, BigBasket made its name selling household and grocery products. While this remains the biggest revenue channel for the e-grocery platform, advertising revenue has also started contributed meaningfully to the company’s top line.

During FY26, BigBasket earned Rs 10,211 crore from sale of household and grocery products, marking a 6% increase from Rs 9,623 crore a year earlier. Advertising revenue jumped 19% to Rs 242 crore from Rs 203.5 crore in FY25.

3. Where did BigBasket spend in FY26? The rise in expenditure outpaced the growth in revenue. The company’s overall spending surged nearly 16% to Rs 13,784 crore in FY26 from Rs 11,894 crore in the previous fiscal year.

  • Purchase of stock-in-trade: This remained the largest cost center for BigBasket. This expense head rose over 10% to Rs 9,102 crore from Rs 8,266 crore a year earlier.
  • Employee cost: BigBasket spent Rs 1,052 crore on employee benefit expenses, including salaries, wages, and incentives, up 8% from Rs 971 crore in FY25.
  • Transportation distribution expenses: The online grocer spent Rs 1,042 crore in this bracket in FY26, up 24% from Rs 838 crore a year ago.
  • Advertising promotional expenses: BigBasket continued to spend heavily on advertising and marketing in FY26. Its expenses under this head surged 14% to Rs 569 crore, compared to Rs 497 crore in FY25.
